Moorings

Saltash Sailing club has, as an additional benefit for its members, in excess of 150 moorings. These consist of a mixture of swinging and trot moorings plus a small number of pontoon moorings. These moorings are laid in groups in an area from the entrance to the Lynher river, past the club and above the bridges northwards to the southern side of the entrance to Saltmill creek. The majority are deep water moorings. Even the few drying moorings only dry at low water spring tides in an easterly wind. All of our moorings are on the Cornish side of the river.

The locations are as follows (from South to North):

- Henn point Swingers for boats up to 28ft (8.5 metres)

- Henn Point Drying moorings for shallow draft boats that can take to the ground up to 28 feet (8.5 metres)

- Henn point Trot moorings, (fore and aft moorings)

- The Henn point moorings all lie in an area between the northern entrance to the river Lynher and Coombe Creek

- Golden Pond – This is an area immediately off the club house which is always in demand (hence the name!)

- Brunel/Jubilee Green Swinging moorings: four swinging moorings located between the Tamar bridges and the Jubilee green pontoon

- Brunel/Jubilee Green trots (located just off and to the north of the pontoon)

- Jubilee Green Pontoon: 8 pontoon berths attached to Jubilee green pontoon
These berths are segregated from main public pontoon by locked gates

- Salt mill trot moorings: Two rows of trot moorings located about 400 – 600 metres north of the Brunel green slipway

- Salt Mill swinging moorings: Locate to the north of the trots.

Saltash Sailing Club have special dispensation to all boats of up to 40 feet to moor on a single buoy here (selected moorings only) the normal port limit is 30 foot.

The club owns about half of the moorings and rents these to members on a yearly basis (covered by monthly payments) This monthly payment covers provision of mooring tackle, rental of mooring space, maintenance of mooring tackle, club membership and tender storage in the club.

Costs depend on location and category of membership varying from £39 - £57 per month. For new mooring members there is a Joining fee of £110 for residents of Devon and Cornwall £300 for anyone from further away.

The remainder of the moorings are owned by full club members (Standard membership) who provide their own mooring tackle and rent the space only from the club at a rate of between £3.75 and £5.10 per foot per annum. Members in this category must get their mooring certificated by the clubs approved moorings contractor. A mooring can cost anything between £700 and £1000 to purchase new. In practice members sell existing mooring tackle on to the new mooring holder when they leave the mooring. These generally sell for between £350 and £500 dependent on condition. Strops are normally extra in both cases.

All the above pricing is based on 2006 rates.

A few rules exist:

The clubs appointed mooring contractor must be used to survey moorings. This stop conflicts occurring between contractors.
Currently the contractors are:

- Diving Belle (phone: 01752 844629 mobile: 07831 841990 email kay@divingelle.co.uk ) for all moorings in Henn point area.

- South Mooring services (phone: 01752 340352 mobile: 07947 895488 mooringman2004@hotmail.com ) for all other moorings apart from the Jubilee green pontoon which is maintained by Caradon council.

The appointed mooring contractor does not survey strops/boat ropes from the mooring buoy to the boat (although he may comment f they are present at the time of survey. It is therefore important that the mooring holder is confident of their suitability and strength before putting a boat on the mooring.

Club mooring are for the private use of club members, moorings cannot be sublet without the mooring officers consent, which will only be given if the incoming occupier is also a club member.

Club moorings cannot not be left unoccupied (by the mooring holder) for a period exceeding two years after which the mooring will be re allocated

Club rules state that boats cannot be put on club moorings if their main use is of a commercial nature. This means that a member who occasionally charters his boat out is OK., whereas a member who charters his boat out for more than 50% of its use is NOT eligible for a club mooring.

Application forms etc are obtainable from the club.
