Spring Newsletter Report from Social Committee
We have had a varied programme of social events this winter and, despite the ice and snow, speakers have been well supported by good audiences. Thank you to everyone who has attended the talks, a full clubhouse always makes for a good evening. Speakers who have given talks on behalf of a charity have been very grateful for generous donations made by members on their evenings. Air Ambulance, Jubilee Sailing Trust and the Island Trust were among those beneficiaries. Continued sincere thanks also to those who have contributed towards raffles, draws and other club events. Other speakers have given a great variety of illustrated talks and one had volunteers helping his glamorous assistant with his fitting out! Before Christmas we were brilliantly entertained by the Club Revue with X-Factor Judges giving marks and comments to a huge assortment of excellent performers. The Giggers carried off first prize with an unforgettable take on a Freddy Mercury and Queen number. New Years Eve saw a smallish but cheerful group dancing to the local duo ‘Idle Hands’. Since New Year we have had Burns Night and the Valentines Evening and once again the Catering Team produced an excellent choice of food from their somewhat cramped workplace. Valentines Evening was a flamboyant occasion with a black and red theme and messages to loved ones read out to great hilarity! It was also great to see a happy number of new members to welcome at the New Members Evening in March and all who came were treated to a selection of Cornish snacks and nibbles of cheeses, saffron cakes and clotted cream. We have experimented this year with a less formal Fitting Out Supper “bistro style” and would be interested to know members’ views on this – is it preferred to the 3 course Laying Up Supper; should we change or have one of each? Let us know. Your Social Committee is always interested in your thoughts, and also for suggestions for speakers – the Autumn Programme is being prepared as we write. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who supported the Easter Draw and congratulations to those who won the varied prizes! - look out for the Summer Draw tickets which will be on sale starting July/August, available from Social Committee members you may come across over the summer! The RNLI have had a great year and report as follows: Saltash Sailing club, as ever, have been very strong supporters of the local branch of the RNLI. Starting at the Boxing Day car treasure hunt and auction £440 was raised, half of which i.e. £220 was given to the RNLI. Then in January the club became the “brain centre” for the annual New Year cerebral general knowledge quiz. Ably run by club member Mike Hughes - £180.50 was raised. Later in January the club became the base for the “soup kitchen” for the SOS - .Share Our Soup day. It was a great success, as well as being the venue, the club members supported very well and £483.70 was banked. The fund raising committee will now take a summer break to go sailing. Next on the agenda will be a ladies night on Tuesday 11th October where we hope to have a fashion show by Intrigue, one of Saltash Fore St shops. So ladies, keep that date in your RNLI diary. All these events do help to put money over the bar at the club and raise the club’s profile in the community, so it’s a win/ win situation. Let us hope we can continue with the successes. The Social Committee welcomes Sue Pym to their team – another much appreciated volunteer.
Penny, Carol, Pat, Liz and Sue thank you all again for your wonderful support throughout the year. We wish you all some Great Summer Sailing and good luck in the racing events.
