WELCOME TO SALTASH SAILING CLUB CADETS
We may not be the only sailing club in Plymouth or on the River Tamar offering Cadet sailing but we do consider ourselves to be one of the best. We have some extra arrangements in place to restrict the number of Cadets due to Covid 19
What does the Club provide?
Qualified, friendly instruction for complete beginners through to advanced sailing techniques. Being affiliated to the RYA and a Recognised Training Centre, instruction is based on their schemes with the full range of their certificates on offer.
We take anyone from the age of 11 up to 18 years of age and you don’t need any experience. We provide fully qualified, experienced, instructors; you must be able to swim 50m.
When do Cadets Sail?
Every Friday evening beginning early April until late September for sessions on the water, 5.00pm until approximately 8.00pm. During the winter months the times are 6.30 until 7.30 and operate on a fortnightly basis. The winter programme consists of those essential theory units which would otherwise interrupt the on-water sessions and numerous fun activities.
Do I need special clothing?
Not really, but water and wind make for a cool environment. Wear warm clothing with a nylon type (windproof) jacket and training shoes (your feet will probably get wet) – some cadets wear lightweight waterproof suits. A wetsuit is of considerable benefit but not necessary when you start. But don’t forget a change of clothing for when you finish; we have full changing facilities at the club with hot showers.
What about the social side?
SSC Cadets have lots of fun and make many new friends. Both the summer and winter programmes include events and activities which are primarily social, like the ‘Pasty and Coke evening’ when we sail away to a suitable beach to share pasties, doughnuts and a can of coke, for games or simply sail away to other scenic areas on the river.
The club takes your safety very seriously! We always have safety boats on the water, with radio contact boat to boat and to the shore. We are able to provide lifejackets or buoyancy aids, especially for those who are just beginning, if you do not have your own.
Interested in racing?
Race training features as part of the programme and a full racing calendar is available with regular dinghy racing on Tuesday evenings and other events throughout the season. Cadets have the use of a wide range of dinghies from the ever popular Mirror, Topper and Pico through to the RS Vision and Feva. If you already have your own dinghy you can race that. It’s all part of the SSC Cadet experience!
Where do I go from here?
Cadet training provides the platform for those hoping to reach higher standards, perhaps even to national level. For those who wish to develop their skills in the field of tuition we provide support and opportunities to gain the qualifications needed to achieve their (RYA) Instructors Certificate.
Contact us by phone, e-mail or better still come and visit us when the cadets are operating. This year is proving very popular and we are having to operate a waiting list.
