Yacht Cruising
Cruisers – and their vessels – come in all shapes and sizes and their reasons for cruising are many-fold. You may be new to cruising, a regular coast-hopper, a seasoned Channel-crosser a ‘retired’ racer or off across the oceans. You might like the accessibility and facilities of a marina, the security of a visitor’s mooring or prefer to find an isolated anchorage for some peace and quiet. If you cruise with children or a dog, they may dictate the length of time afloat and need to access the shore regularly. Whichever categories you find yourself in, the aim of the cruising section of the club is to be inclusive, friendly relaxed and approachable.
CRUISES
The vagaries of the British weather mean that any plans made need to be flexible and quite spontaneous. Once the weather outlook is stable (usually from midweek onwards) any plans for the weekend will be posted on the Saltash Cruisers’ WhatsApp group. Feel free to join in if you would like company but please be aware that each skipper is responsible for the safety of their own boat and crew. The link to the group is at the bottom of this page.
One regular event - which has been well-supported in the past - is Fowey Week. A group of cruisers get together to support SSC’s racers and enjoy the hospitality. One side of Pont Pill Pontoon has been booked from 15th to 23rd August 2026 for our use and I will need to confirm numbers in mid-July. All welcome!
AWAY DAYS
When time afloat is limited, the local beaches are great for a casual meet-up. Cawsand and Kingsand, Jennycliff and Polhawn all offer opportunities for a picnic, BBQ, swim or beach games. Some of them even have a pub! Watch out for these on the WhatsApp group.
CRUISERS’ EVENINGS
The nature of cruising is that we can be ships in the night! Coming and going at different times and never seeing one another. A Friday evening get-together for cruisers at the beginning and end of the sailing season is a good way to meet one another and introduce new members of our community.
PHOTOS
It would be great to have a bit of a photo gallery on the SSC website. Please share any good photographs of your cruising adventures via the WhatsApp group but ensure that anyone on them is happy for them to appear on the website or on Social Media.
CHILDREN’S LOGBOOK COMPETITION
Enter your children’s accounts of their sailing trips for the chance for them to win a prize! This can be in any format (a diary, scrapbook, drawings etc). Simply contact me and it can be submitted in whatever way is appropriate. Age to be stated on all submissions – if there are enough entries, there may be more than one category! Closing date 07/09/2026.
